my precious

i must go see her.
she's in the monterey bay aquarium. they've kept her there for over 18 days, the longest a white shark has been kept in captivity.
although, i do believe they are lucky that they have found a juvenile that hasn't yet made the transition to hunting live marine mammals yet may have something to do with it. but just a guess. the juveniles live off of bony fishes along baja and southern california then when they're full grown adults they come up to northern california to snack on the big fat sea lions and elephant seals. BLUBBERMANIA!
so i think this young female is surviving on the bony fishes they're giving her because that's what she was eating in the wild. i think the size of the tank helps too. the tank they had at steinhart aquarium was big but the shark they had was huge too. and it turned out the way the tank was welded together it created an arc with the seawater and since sharks are very sensitive to electric activity she kept pounding herself into the same spot over and over. when it became apparent she wouldn't feed and was just smashing into the wall the decision was made to release her back in the wild.
